Innes spent a large part of his childhood with his parents and two-year-old eldest brother in post-war Germany. His father being an adjutant in the British army.
He took piano lessons from 7 to 14 years old but learned to play the guitar on his own. He studied at Goldsmith’s School of Art in London, where he met his future wife, Yvonne Catherine Hilton.
They married on March 3, 1966, and had three sons, Miles (born in 1967), Luke (born in 1971) and Barney (born in 1977).
